Variable Weather Conditions Affect Rossi and Hayden Season Ending at Valencia

Valentino Rossi Ducati Valencia Race 2012

The final race of the 2012 MotoGP season, at Valencia, was seriously affected by uncertain weather.

After the wet warm-up session, in which Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden had found a good rain setting, the precipitation stopped and the MotoGP race started with a track that was only damp.

Most of the riders began the race with rain tyres, though a small group risked slicks, returning to the garages to change bikes just before the lights went out. That group, which was obliged to start from pit lane, included the eventual winner, Dani Pedrosa, and Nicky Hayden. The American was caught out by the tricky conditions and crashed before he was able to take advantage of having made the right choice.

Valentino Rossi started with rain tyres and was in fourth place when, 25 laps from the end, he re-entered pit lane to switch bikes. With the dry tyres, he no longer felt at home and was only able to finish in tenth place.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 10th
?It?s really a shame that the last race with Ducati finished this way. Things went well this morning in the wet warm-up, and in similar conditions, it would have been possible to do a nice result. Instead, this half-and-half situation was truly difficult. In the end the right choice was to use the slick tyres, but my bike on the grid had a very different setting from the other one, so I didn?t feel like switching. With the rain tyres, I felt fine at first, but then when it was necessary to switch, the situation became more complicated. There was a thin dry line, but I couldn?t put the bike where I wanted and as soon as I would go off that line, it was very risky. I could only try to finish. I would have liked to finish these two years with Ducati better. They were two difficult seasons, but I nonetheless leave behind many people that I enjoyed working with, and with whom it was nice to go racing.?

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) DNF
?It?s a shame to end a difficult season in a bad way, but at least I?m 100 per cent okay from the crash. On the grid, it was a really close call between slick tyres and rain tyres. If the track had been warm, it would clearly have been better to start on slicks, but the cold surface temperature made it close. On the warm-up lap, Lorenzo was going faster than us on slicks, so in my opinion, it was the right decision to come in and switch bikes and start from pit lane. After that, it was okay on the dry line, but to make passes, you had to go out where it was treacherous. I got behind Petrucci and couldn?t find a way past. I was waiting to go by him on the front straightaway, but I got a little bit wide in the last corner and hit a patch. I went down so quickly that there was no way to save it. Next season starts now, so hopefully things will be better.?

HRC Sepang Private Test: Bautista Fastest As Rain Cuts Testing Short

Rain continues to plague MotoGP testing, this time severely curtailing testing for the Honda teams out at Sepang. Dani Pedrosa's decision to sit this test out may well prove to be sensible, with rain looking likely to severely restrict testing over all three days at Sepang.

The first day of the test saw Marc Marquez, Alvaro Bautista, and Honda test riders Kousuke Akiyoshi and Takumi Takahashi sit out part of the morning session, waiting for the weather to clear and the track to dry. It eventually did, giving the Honda men a couple of hours' dry track time after noon before the rain cut the test short again at 2pm local time. The temperatures, humidity and rain left the track dirty and lacking grip, but that did not prevent Alvaro Bautista from getting close to the existing race lap record at the Malaysian circuit, though the Go&Fun Gresini rider was nearly 2 seconds off pole time. Bautista had spent the day testing uprated suspension supplied by Showa, in an attempt to allow him to close the gap to the Ohlins runners.

2013 Provisional Moto2 Line Up Announced: Espargaro Favorite In Kalex-Dominated Grid

The FIM today announced the provisional entry list for the Moto2 class in 2013. As in Moto3, the champion has moved up, Marc Marquez having made the jump to MotoGP, leaving Pol Espargaro as the man to beat. With a new combined rider/bike weight limit, larger riders should have less of a disadvantage, improving Scott Redding's chances, though Thomas Luthi, Julian Simon and Alex de Angelis are all likely to feature at the front once again.

The Moto2 class sees a number of rookies enter for 2013. Sandro Cortese is the biggest name, the reigning Moto3 champion entering inside a team built entirely around him, and running WP suspension. He is joined in Moto2 by former teammate Danny Kent, the young Briton going to the Tech 3 team where he will ride alongside French rookie Louis Rossi. Two Indonesians also enter the class, Doni Tata Pradita making a return to Grand Prix with the Gresini squad, while Rafid Topan Sucipto joins Ant West in the QMMF Team, after wildcarding at Valencia. A familiar Japanese name also makes his return, this time in a managerial capacity. Tady Okada will be running the Honda Racing Asia Tady team, running Moriwaki chassis and likely to field Yuki Takahashi.

2013 Provisional Moto3 Line Up Announced: Exciting Bunch Of Rookies Enter The Class

The FIM today announced the provisional entry list for the Moto3 class in 2013. With 2012 champion Sandro Cortese gone, Maverick Viñales starts as favorite for the title, now delighted to be aboard a full factory KTM with JHK Laglisse. Challenging Viñales will be Jonas Folger, the surprise package of 2012 once he had switched to a Kalex KTM with Aspar, and this year's runner Luis Salom. Alex Rins will be a rider to watch, the young Spaniard having impressed in the latter part of his rookie season.

A fantastic crop of young rookies enters Moto3, most of them coming up from the Red Bull Rookies cup. Germans Florian Alt and Philipp Oettl are joined by Belgian youngster Livio Loi, all three offering an interesting prospect. From the Spanish CEV championship comes Francesco Bagnaia, hotly fancied by some observers, the young Italian slotting in alongside Romano Fenati in the Team Italia squad.

Argentina MotoGP Round Set To Be Canceled?

Even before the Argentinian round of MotoGP had been officially added to the calendar, the race has been in doubt. The race, provisionally scheduled to take place on April 14th next year at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit, has been caught in the crossfire between the Argentinian government and Repsol, over the former nationalizing Repsol YPF, the Argentinian arm of the Spanish petroleum giant.

Now, it looks as if the race is about to be canceled officially. According to Damià Aguilar, MotoGP reporter for Catalunya Radio, the Argentinian GP is to taken off the calendar, with an official announcement due to be made on Friday. The cancellation of the race will leave a large gap between the first race of the season at Qatar, scheduled for March 31st, and the second race at Austin, Texas, booked three weeks later on April 21st.  To close up that gap, Qatar will be moved up a week and be held on April 7th instead, leaving just two weeks between the first two races.

Crutchlow and Smith frustrated by rain at Valencia test

Bradley Smith Valencia Test 2012

Cold temperatures and intermittent rain showers meant the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team's all-new British line-up of Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith experienced a frustrating start to preparations for the 2013 MotoGP World Championship in Valencia today.

Early morning blue skies were quickly replaced by heavy cloud cover and the Ricardo Tormo track had only been open for 10 minutes when rain started to fall.

Rain continued to fall at regular intervals throughout the day and Crutchlow a nd Smith both opted not to venture out of the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 garage.

The weather disruption proved particularly frustrating for Smith, who was eager to get his first laps on the YZR-M1 machine to kick-off preparations for his rookie year in MotoGP next season.

The 21-year-old sat in his new leathers for the majority of the day but his hopes for an improvement in conditions never materialised. Heavy rain is forecast for the second day tomorrow, but Smith plans to complete some laps to gauge the performance and feel of the YZR-M1 in wet conditions.

Cal Crutchlow:
?Today was pretty frustrating because I didn't even put my leathers on. Everybody was really pumped up and excited for the start of the 2013 season but it made no sens e to go out. We need a dry track to evaluate the material we have got, and unfortunately it looks like tomorrow is going to be even worse with heavy rain. It is a pity because we only need a couple of hours on track to check a couple of things. We'll see what happens but if it was dry today it was going to be difficult for me. My crash in the race on Sunday has left me with quite a lot of pain in my left hand but it still would have been good to go out and do some riding."

Bradley Smith:
?To say I am disappointed is an under statement. I've been looking forward to today for months, so to not even get out on track for one lap is a bit frustrating, but there is nothing I can do about it. When I got in my leathers yesterday and sat on the bike for the first time, it really hit home what a big day in my career this was. It i s a shame that I'm still waiting to try the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1 for the first time but my chance will come. For most of the day the conditions were the worst possible. I was only going to get let out if the track was really soaking so I could get a feel for the bike. It looks the weather is going to be even worse tomorrow but at least I'll get out for a few laps and that will be a bonus."

Mapfre Aspar Moto2 Valencia Test Review

Nico Terol Valencia Moto2 Test 2012

Nico Terol and Jordi Torres finish fourth and sixth in Valencia test, improving on their fastest times from the race weekend. Torres also had his presence in the team for 2013 confirmed officially

With the Valencia GP still fresh in the memory, the Moto2 riders moved straight on with their preparations for 2013. Despite having already ridden over three days at the last GP of the year, the intermediate class riders showed tireless energy to try out new things over the course of the seven hours of track time. The track opened at 10am local time, and closed at 5pm with only a lunch break in between to split stints. The conditions in Valencia were finally dry, with none of the interruptions that had affected the weekend. Some thirty riders were in action, including some newcomers moving up from Moto3.

Today was a day as productive as it was intense for MAPFRE Aspar riders Nico Terol and Jordi Torres. Both were early risers and went out on track shortly before 11am, then continued through to the end. Torres completed 72 laps, Terol 63. Besides the new clutch set to be used by all Moto2 riders next season, there were other changes made by the duo. Nico worked on the front fork, in order to get more traction on corner entry and confidence under braking. He also tried various tyre compounds, including a softer one in the last stint of the afternoon that received a positive review. It was at the end of the day that he clocked his best lap: 1?35.4 ? four tenths faster than his qualifying time for the Valencia GP.

Likewise, Jordi Torres also dropped his lap times from the weekend by four tenths. The Spaniard focused on the geometry of his bike, looking for the best riding position for his frame. The development of this work was reflected in his lowering his times considerably. The Spanish Moto2 Champion in 2011 and recently crowned European Supersport titlist, Torres was confirmed today as a MAPFRE Aspar Team rider for 2013 ?showing the confidence shown in him by the team since his incorporation as a replacement rider for the end of 2012.

4th Nico Terol 1.35.4 (63 laps): "After getting the podium yesterday, in today's test I enjoyed myself more than I have for a long time. The aim was to get used to the new clutch that all the riders will use next year. all pilots. At midday I put the old clutch in, so that I could test out the differences.  I went pretty well with it, but we still have to work on it. We also put on different tyre compounds and we focused on changing the position of the forks. What we wanted was to do was find more feel under braking and be able to brake harder.  We also wanted to get more grip. The truth is that we have found what we were looking for, especially in the last run out on track. Our times have even dropped from the weekend. I'm still savouring the success from yesterday, and the good feeling of this test mean that I end the time here very satisfied.?

6th Jordi Torres 1.35.5 (72 laps): ?My chief mechanic had many changes scheduled for this weekend, but because it rained so much we had our plans changed. That meant that today in the sun we tried out all of the things that we had needed to look at. We basically worked on various changes to the bike?s geometry. Being such a big rider, we are playing around with many different types of positions, but I think that today we found one that was spot on. I am happy, because we put in good times here and had a good pace, even better than in qualifying for the race. The work was very positive, but it?s just a shame that at midday we had a crash at turn 4 due to the cold tyre. The bike spat me off but I wasn?t hurt, we simply lost a bit of time. It was confirmed today that I will remain with the MAPFRE Aspar Team for 2013. We can thus consider this test my first as a full-time GP rider. I am a rider who prepares mi practices well, which you could see today. I will work very hard this winter, and it will be a privilege to start a Grand Prix season from the beginning, rather than as a substitute. I want to thank the MAPFRE Aspar Team, which is here to win, and I will give everything to be up to the challenge.?
